Four Tips To Help You When Turning Yourself In For A Warrant

Finance & Money Blog

When you find out there is a warrant for your arrest, your life may immediately get a little more stressful. The idea of jail time can mean separation from your family, getting fired from your job, and having a criminal record. The last thing you want to do is run from the warrant. This only means a life of looking over your shoulder and worrying about when the cops are going to show up and arrest you. Turning yourself in can resolve the warrant, but there are steps to take to ensure that it is handled the right way. Here are some tips to help make the process simpler when turning yourself in for a warrant.

Speak to an Attorney

The moment you find out there is a warrant for your arrest, you need to make an appointment with an attorney right away. Not only will this allow you to choose your counsel, but the attorney can also find out the details of the warrant if you are unsure about it. It's possible that a bond has already been set up by the judge and your lawyer can find out how much it is. Hiring an attorney before you turn yourself in can reduce and even eliminate some of your jail time.

Gather the Necessary Funds

Once you have found out there is a bond set and how much it is, you then need to start gathering the funds to post the bail. Even if you do not have a large amount of cash available, you can put up property to post bail. You need to speak with the bondsman to find out how much they require. Typically, the purchase price of a bond will run about 10% of what the judge sets the bond as. For example, if the judge sets the bond at $1,000, you can expect to pay around $100 to the bondsman. Companies like Absolute Bail Bonds may be able to help you with this situation.

Be Polite and Courteous

When you arrive at the police station, it is imperative that you do everything that is asked of you. Do not bring any weapons or jewelry. During the arrest, you will be read your Miranda rights by the officer. It is your choice whether you choose to say anything or not, but it is always best not to say anything unless your lawyer tells you otherwise. If you exhibit good behavior, the officers will likely treat you much better and work with you during the process.
